CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF POLO
This year polo celebrates its 150th year as a modern game. It is a sport that demands a special bond between horse and rider, a unique fusion of athletic talents – stamina, strength, flexibility and skill.
Since 1869, what was soon dubbed the Sport of Kings has enthralled spectators across the globe. While the sport has its roots thousands of years ago in East Asia, it appeared in its more modern form in England for the first time 150 years ago. Polo has since evolved into a more organised game, requiring training, talent and a pony with heart and spirit for the game. Today, polo is the only contact sport where men and women can compete on an equal level. Polo attracts an enthusiastic, diverse and loyal community. The game aside, it is exhilarating for spectators who not only enjoy a high-speed game but watch it with all senses fired up. It is exciting on the eye, with the sound of thundering hooves and the crack of mallet against ball adding to the thrill of the game.
It is no surprise that the sport is gaining in popularity, especially in Africa where rather than Sport of Kings it has become The Sport of Captains – and their teams. Polo has come home.
